Intro to the Makey Makey system! (check out the videos...seriously so cool!!)
What happens when you give gifted students a bunch of alligator clips, a circuit board, and a banana? You get a classroom full of high-voltage curiosity! This week, our class dived headfirst into the world of physical computing using the Makey Makey system. Ok, so we didn't use an actual banana this time...but here is a breakdown about how we used the Makey Makey this week.
The Conductivity Test
We started our mission by building a DIY conductivity tester. Students connected everyday objects to the circuit board to see what could actually conduct electricity. They bypassed standard wires and went straight for the weird and wonderful.
They tested:
- Playdough, glue stick, pencil, rubber band
- Sriracha packet, apple, lime, candy
- Shirt, massive flower vase, shoe, broom, magnet, Legos, seashell, etc.
- Human body!
Every successful connection closed the loop, sending a signal to the computer and sparking instant cheers.
Sketching Playable Instruments
Next, we turned art into engineering. Using regular graphite pencils on standard paper, students drew their own custom instrument interfaces. Because graphite conducts electricity, their sketches became fully functional touchpads.
Within minutes, students were pressing pencil lines on paper to play digital pianos, drums, and synthesizers.
Watching these bright minds experiment, fail, iterate, and succeed reminds us that science isn't just a textbook subject. It is a hands-on adventure.
And, as a teacher, failure is the best part of this activity! Hear me out! During this activity, many realized that parts of their instrument were not working. They retraced the circuits (graphite pencil marks), darkened them, fixed breaks in the lines, erased accidental connections, held the 'earth' button to complete the connection, and tried again. With perseverance and trying new solutions, each student was able to make a 100% successful playable instrument! It was an awesome day with the Makey Makey!
